The hottest fundraising topics of 2017 – as voted by you!

December 27, 2017

Well, dear reader, you voted with your clicks – here are the top five articles that got your attention in 2017!

But first, I wanted to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to you for taking the time to read and share my posts.

I’ve had a blast writing all of them – and if they've made your life as a fundraiser a fraction easier, or helped you reflect more deeply on a challenging issue, you can consider me a happy camper.

So, without further ado, here are the top five hottest Blue Sky Philanthropy reads of 2017:

1. Your fail-proof recipe for a compelling story

We all know we’re supposed to be telling more stories in our fundraising – but why are so few of us doing it, or doing it well? This post breaks down a foolproof recipe for effective storytelling, and offers a free story template download (‘cause who doesn’t love free goodies!)

2. Three books that changed the way I fundraise

Oh! You love to read as much as I do. I knew we had a lot in common! In this post, I share some of the books that made a real difference to my development and learning as a fundraiser. Some good picks to add to your reading list for 2018!

3. The Inclusive Fundraiser: start with yourself first

Yes! I’m so excited to see this article in the top five – it’s clear that smart folks like you know that organizations (and fundraisers!) who aren’t taking diversity, equity and inclusion seriously are going to get left behind. Stay tuned for more installments in the Inclusive Fundraiser series in 2018.

4. The #1 killer of fabulous fundraising

If left unchecked, at best, it’ll hold our fundraising back – and at worst, it can bring your organization to its knees. It's FEAR – and this post shares how it's getting in your way – along with some good questions to help you get over it.

5. A very personal post about…fundraising metrics?!

Who knew metrics were hot? Savvy readers clearly know how important it is to measure the effectiveness of your fundraising – and it probably didn't hurt that I shared my own personal story of donor despondence.

As we come to the end of the year, I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge how difficult 2017 has been for many of us.

We've found our communities and organizations under attack as we grapple with a rising storm of intolerance.

But through it all, you’ve shown courage, fighting for what you believe in and working hard to raise more money for your great cause.

Keep up all your great work, and please, take good care of yourself – the world needs you right now, more than ever.

That’s me, signing off for 2017 – let’s all keep our hopes up for more blue skies and sunny days for the year ahead!
